Is it time for Westwego to televise its council meetings?

New storage tank near Westwego Water Plant.

It has been quite a few years since I have made a council meeting in Westwego. Just last month, I decided to attend one. With so much laying on the election, there was a lot of mud slinging.

One of the things that came up is the amount of deficient fire hydrants within the city limits. Actually, 44% of these hydrants. That’s pretty disgusting.

Then at this months (April 2017) meeting, I was quite surprised to learn that the water plant, which I might mention has been shut down for several years, has been gutted and the city doesn’t even have all of the funds secured to complete the project but they spent money building a new water tank. A water tank that they can’t even fill with their own water since they are currently on the Jefferson Parish water system. To top it off, the word on the street is they put in new transfer pumps, either just before the shut down of the plant or after the plant was shut down and these pumps have now been sitting idle and they are currently out of warranty.

The sad part in all of this is, for so long now, I was under the assumption the water plant was actually already undergoing a major overhaul and that this work had already begun. After all, the plant has been shut down for several years.

With all of this going on, one has to ask, should the city council meetings be televised? If they are televised, maybe more would be brought to light with the residents of our city.
